Ordinary
Culture: Heikes, Helms, McMillian
gallery guide
11" x 8.5" (folded) | 11" x 17" (flat)
32 pages: 4 nested sections, 3 unfold to reveal 34" x 22" posters
The 3 artists included in Ordinary Culture repurpose and re-contextualize
the ordinary world around us — be it objects, experiences, or belief systems
— with unexpected results. The gallery guide does the same by borrowing
certain elements of the ordinary — the pagination of a newspaper (nested
sections) is combined with the size and feel of a tabloid (cheap, semi-gloss
paper and typical sizes page sizes) along with default fonts (Times Roman and
Helvetica) — but does not reference verbatim the graphic vernaculars of
those sources. The result is a form that is vaguely familiar, but slightly off;
slightly strange; slightly curious. Working closely with all 3 artists I was
able to collect process shots of the new works they were creating for the Walker
exhibition — printed in black and white — as well as images of the
near final pieces that are reproduced as large full-color fold out posters.
